Expository writing typically focuses on writing that's NOT creative writing in the standard sense (no poetry or fiction, for example) but that IS based on fact and format. The essay in a variety of costumes (persuasive, informative, comparative, contrasting, etc.) and lengths (five paragraph, lengthier, even through research paper) and formalities (informal, familiar, objective, formal) is the usual mainstay. Creativity does exist in the style of the writer and in the purpose of the piece, such as an expose` or an interview. Students often need help in fleshing out paragraphs with expanded support, looking at the original task or objective and making sure it's been completed, and writing conclusions that express the point of their writing without simply restating the original thesis. I hope this helps.
